TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) have announced today (2nd June 2006) that global cumulative sales of the Toyota Prius have topped the 500,000 mark, with approximately 505,000 units sold worldwide this year.
Toyota launched the Prius, the world??™s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle, in Japan in 1997 and began selling it in North America, Europe and elsewhere in 2000. Since it's introduction to the Irish market in 2001, nearly 750 Prius have been sold.
Aiming to achieve a fusion of environmental performance and power, in 2003, TMC introduced in the second-generation Prius a new-generation hybrid system based on the concept of Hybrid Synergy Drive.The announcement of these latest Prius sales figures follows the recent awarding, for the third successive year, of International Engine of Year. The 1.5-litre petrol engine of the Hybrid Synergy Drive?® has won best 1.4-1.8-litre engine in the awards and has also been named ???Best Fuel Economy??™ for its application in the Toyota Prius. This means the Hybrid Synergy Drive?® has won both categories every year since it was launched in the second generation Prius in 2004.
